About Bugoma Forest Reserve
Bugoma Central Forest Reserve is one of Uganda's last remaining blocks of natural tropical forest outside the national park system. Covering 411 square kilometres in the Hoima and Kikuube districts, it shelters approximately 500 chimpanzees, making it one of the most important chimp habitats in the country.
The forest also supports populations of black-and-white colobus, red-tailed monkeys, olive baboons, and over 220 bird species. Bugoma has gained international attention due to conservation threats from sugarcane plantations encroaching on its boundaries, making visits here a meaningful contribution to its protection.
