About Marakele National Park

Marakele National Park is a malaria-free Big Five reserve nestled in the dramatic Waterberg Mountains of Limpopo Province. The park name means "place of sanctuary" in Tswana, and it lives up to its name with 67,000 hectares of spectacular mountain scenery, ancient yellowwood forests, and open grasslands. Marakele is home to the world's largest colony of endangered Cape vultures, with over 800 breeding pairs nesting on the park's towering cliff faces. The reserve supports all Big Five species including both black and white rhino, along with brown hyena, cheetah, and over 300 bird species. Its malaria-free status and proximity to Johannesburg make it an ideal family-friendly safari destination.
