About uMkhuze Game Reserve
uMkhuze Game Reserve is one of South Africa's oldest protected areas and a component of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Established in 1912, the 40,000-hectare reserve encompasses a remarkable diversity of habitats from fever tree forests and fig forest to open savannah, reed beds, and the expansive Nsumo Pan — one of South Africa's most important bird habitats. uMkhuze is renowned as a premier birding destination with over 420 recorded species, including rarities like Pel's fishing owl, Neergaard's sunbird, and African broadbill. The reserve supports Big Five wildlife (though lion are absent) including black and white rhino, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and nyala — the latter found in extraordinary densities. The famous hides overlooking waterholes and pans offer some of the finest wildlife photography opportunities in Africa.
