Safari Parks & Reserves

The third-largest national park in South Africa, Addo is the only park in the world that is home to the Big Seven - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino, great white shark, and southern right whale. Located in the malaria-free Eastern Cape, it was established in 1931 to protect the last 11 elephants in the region. Today the park hosts over 600 elephants and has expanded to include a marine section at Algoa Bay. The dense Valley Bushveld vegetation creates close-range encounters, and the park is easily combined with the Garden Route.

Sabi Sand is arguably the finest private game reserve in Africa, sharing an unfenced border with Kruger National Park. Renowned for producing the best leopard sightings on the continent, the reserve is home to legendary lodges that have defined luxury safari travel for decades. The reserve's traversing rights system means that vehicles from different lodges can explore vast areas, dramatically increasing wildlife sighting opportunities. With strict vehicle limits at sightings and off-road driving permitted, the quality of encounters here is unmatched.

Namib-Naukluft National Park is one of the largest conservation areas in Africa, encompassing the ancient Namib Desert, the dramatic Naukluft Mountains, and the iconic red dunes of Sossusvlei. Covering nearly 50,000 square kilometres, it protects some of the world's oldest and most striking desert landscapes. The park's centrepiece is Sossusvlei, where towering apricot-coloured dunes — some over 300 metres high — rise above stark white clay pans. Deadvlei, with its eerie collection of 900-year-old dead camelthorn trees against a backdrop of orange dunes, is one of Africa's most photographed scenes. Despite the harsh conditions, the park supports desert-adapted wildlife including oryx, springbok, ostriches, and the remarkable Namib desert beetle.

Lake Manyara National Park is a compact gem nestled between the dramatic western escarpment of the Great Rift Valley and the soda waters of Lake Manyara. Despite its relatively small size of 648 square kilometers, two-thirds of which is the lake itself, the park packs an incredible diversity of habitats and wildlife into its narrow strip of land. The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, vast flocks of flamingos that paint the lakeshore pink, and its dense groundwater forest teeming with primates. Ernest Hemingway once described it as 'the loveliest [lake] I had seen in Africa.' It serves as an excellent introduction to Tanzania's northern safari circuit and is easily combined with visits to the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti.

Tsavo West National Park is the more scenic and geologically diverse half of the great Tsavo ecosystem. Known for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, crystal-clear Mzima Springs, and the legendary Shetani lava flows, Tsavo West offers a visually striking contrast to its flatter eastern counterpart. Covering 9,065 square kilometres, the park's varied terrain includes rocky outcrops, extinct volcanic cones, forested hills, and riverine vegetation along the Tsavo River. The underwater viewing chamber at Mzima Springs allows visitors to watch hippos and crocodiles from below the waterline. Tsavo West is home to a healthy population of the Big Five, including black rhino in the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary.

Nxai Pan National Park is a fossil lakebed covered in grasslands that come alive during the wet season with enormous herds of zebra and springbok. The park is home to the famous Baines' Baobabs, a cluster of ancient baobab trees first painted by Thomas Baines in 1862 that remain virtually unchanged. The park links with Makgadikgadi to form part of a greater conservation area.

Kalinzu Forest Reserve is a 137-square-kilometre tropical rainforest near Queen Elizabeth National Park that offers an affordable and less crowded alternative for chimpanzee tracking. The forest shelters approximately 300 chimpanzees, several groups of which have been habituated for tourism. Kalinzu is notable for its high chimp tracking success rates and significantly lower permit costs than Kibale. The forest also supports populations of L'Hoest's monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus, and over 380 bird species. Its location on the road between Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi makes it a convenient addition to a western Uganda itinerary.

Mokolodi Nature Reserve is a privately run conservation and education centre located just 10 kilometres south of Gaborone. The reserve serves as an important wildlife sanctuary and education facility, housing rescued animals and running community conservation programs. Visitors can see white rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and various antelope species. It is an excellent introduction to Botswana's wildlife for families and those with limited time.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Matobo (Matopos) features dramatic granite kopjes and ancient San rock art dating back thousands of years. The park has the highest density of leopards in Zimbabwe and an important population of both black and white rhinos.

One of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse rainforests, Nyungwe is a primate paradise with 13 species including chimpanzees and the rare L'Hoest's monkey. The park features a spectacular canopy walkway suspended 50 meters above the forest floor.

Arusha National Park is a small but strikingly beautiful park situated between the peaks of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania. Covering just 552 square kilometers, it encompasses a remarkable range of habitats including montane forest, the Ngurdoto Crater (often called 'Little Ngorongoro'), the alkaline Momella Lakes, and the upper slopes of Mount Meru, Tanzania's second-highest mountain. The park is a haven for black-and-white colobus monkeys, giraffes, buffalos, and over 400 bird species. While it lacks large predators, it offers exceptional walking safaris, canoeing on the Momella Lakes, and the challenging but rewarding multi-day climb of Mount Meru. Its proximity to Arusha town makes it perfect for a day trip or as an acclimatization hike before climbing Kilimanjaro.

Lalibela Wildlife Reserve is a family-owned, malaria-free Big Five destination in the Eastern Cape, encompassing 7,500 hectares of Valley Bushveld near the Bushman's River. Named after the ancient Ethiopian rock-hewn churches, Lalibela has been steadily building its reputation as a quality safari option for travellers combining wildlife with the Garden Route. The reserve supports all Big Five alongside giraffe, hippo, cheetah, and over 280 bird species. Lalibela operates three distinct lodges — including the innovative Lentaba Lodge with its wheelchair-accessible game-viewing vehicle — making it one of the most inclusive safari destinations in South Africa.
